Castelfalfi, Florence 2015 – 2016
The project is an essential part of a strategic plan of private initiative for the revival of the territory and the protection of the environmental heritage of Castelfalfi, an ancient hamlet, the heart of an estate of 1,100 hectares in the Tuscan hills, a natural paradise, which after decades of abandonment finds its role as an inhabited and active center, thanks to a unified landscape redevelopement. The new plant for the production of electricity from wood biomass works in a cogenerative system, supplies the whole estate heating and air-conditioning network, using agricultural byproducts and virgin chips, obtained from the maintenance of the wooded areas of the estate, thus contributing to the prevention of fire risk and hydrogeological disaster, and shows how the care of the territory can become energy, development, employment and sustainable tourism. The design of the plant, placed in such an exceptional position, follows the landscaping approach, with particular attention to the use of materials and colors, and especially to new roofing and flooring: aesthetic solutions qualify the view from above and mitigate the visual impact through surfaces with a “vibrated” composite image, where a drawn plot of embedded metal profiles orders the whole area and gives shape and proportions to surfaces with different materials, colors and dimensions, a sort of mosaic which reproduces the broader one of the surrounding landscape.
